RECOGNISING AND RESPONDING TO THE PERSON WHO MAY BE AT RISK FROM SUICIDE.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID FOR THE SUICIDAL PERSON, a Mental Health First Aid (Australia) program.

More than three thousand Australians die each year from suicide and a much greater number engage in self-harming behaviour that does not result in their death.

Another group of people harm themselves for reasons other than to end their lives.

Suicide is a national, community, family and individual tragedy which is often preventable.

Intentional self-harm is distressing and confusing to those around the individual and can prove unintentionally fatal to some.

Do you know how to help someone that is feeling suicidal? Learn practical skills to improve your confidence in this 5 hour course.

The Mental Health First Aid for the Suicidal Person Course is based on our revised Mental Health First Aid Guidelines for Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours. It is a stand-alone course that complements the 12-hour Standard MHFA course, Blended MHFA Courses and the 14-hour Youth MHFA course.

What the Course Covers

Curriculum content is based on expert consensus guidelines developed with the Delphi method using both professional and consumer experts from English speaking developed countries. You will learn:

  • How to identify warning signs for suicide

  • How to confidently support a person in crisis

  • How to have a conversation with someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours

At the completion of the course you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to safely have a conversation with a suicidal person to determine their safety, support and referral needs.

Course Format

This course consists of 4-hours of face-to-face training.
Course participants receive a Handbook to keep and receive a digital Certificate of Completion when they submit online feedback.

Who can attend a course

Any interested adult can attend. Please note that the MHFA for the Suicidal Person Course is not a postvention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide. The MHFA for the Suicidal Person Course is not a therapy or a support group and it is important that people undertaking the course are feeling relatively robust when they undertake it. Specific postvention support services can be found at the Beyondblue website.

The course complements the 14-hour Standard MHFA course, Blended MHFA Courses, the 14-hour Youth MHFA course and the 12-hour Older Person MHFA course.
